A Winter Storm Didn’t Stop the Music
On February 22, 2026, a winter storm swept through New York City—but the music went on. Students from across the New York Jazz Academy community still made their way to the stage, and the result was one of the most inspiring concert days of the season.
The performances brought together musicians from every background imaginable: teens, college students, young professionals, retirees, and working adults from a wide range of industries. Some were just beginning their jazz journey, others were developing intermediate skills, and several performers were playing at a very advanced level. What they all had in common was a commitment to learning the music and showing up ready to play.
The program reflected the spirit of NYJA itself—varied, collaborative, and deeply rooted in the tradition. Small ensembles and mid-sized groups performed a wide range of repertoire, from bebop classics like “Anthropology” and “Dexterity,” to standards such as “My Funny Valentine,” to Latin repertoire including “One Note Samba.” Other highlights included “East of the Sun,” “Blue Fable,” “Doxy,” “Afro Blue,” and more. With multiple ensembles sharing the stage, there was plenty of room for solos, creative arrangements, and the spontaneous interaction that makes jazz so exciting.
Unlike many traditional recitals, NYJA concerts are built around the idea that jazz is a living, collaborative art form. Players work together in ensembles throughout the semester and then bring that work to the stage in a real performance setting. The result is a concert experience that feels closer to a jazz club than a formal recital hall.

Real Jazz Ensemble Experience in New York City
At New York Jazz Academy®, students don’t just study theory—they play the music regularly in ensembles. Throughout the semester, musicians rehearse together, develop repertoire, and build improvisational skills, culminating in live performances at NYC venues. The goal is simple: to create a serious musical environment where people can grow as improvisers while performing real music with other committed players. NYJA students include teen musicians preparing for conservatory programs, college students continuing their jazz studies, adult professionals developing their musicianship, retirees returning to music after many years, and dedicated hobbyists who want to play at a high level. This mix of experience and backgrounds creates a musical community that is both welcoming and deeply focused on the music.
