Private Lessons
Lessons are available at your home, at a music rehearsal studio, or at the teacher's private studio. Our teachers all must meet strict criteria as educators and musicians. They are also selected based on their communication skills and ability to work well with students of all ages. Lessons are 30-60 minutes at least once a week. Tuition payments are made per semester. Ages 9-11
Junior Jazz Workshop (ages 9-14)
Junior Jazz Workshop is open to younger students, ages 9-11, and older students, ages 12-14, who may not want the added pressure of playing with the 15-19 year old students. Each week, students will rehearse for one hour as a jazz ensemble followed by 30 minutes in sections (woodwinds, high brass, low brass, rhythm section). All rehearsals are coached by leading jazz educators and professionals. The section rehearsal is similar to a small group lesson, and students benefit from extremely personalized instruction. Students are introduced to improvisation and jazz styles while also developing musical fundamentals, including instrumental technique, note-reading, music theory, ensemble performance practice, the jazz songbook, and more. Auditions are required, but only as a form of assessment, as no experience is necessary to join. A commitment of 1.5 hours/week is required. Each student will receive the following:
Tuition: $575/semester (14 weeks). $1150/year (28 weeks).
The program is a semester-long commitment. Scholarships are available.

Private lessons for students enrolled in our ensemble programs are available for an additional fee per semester. If you are not interested in junior jazz, jazz lab workshop or big band workshop and would instead like to sign up only for private lessons, they also are available to you through NYJA. Lessons are available at your home, at a music rehearsal studio, or at the teacher's private studio. Our teachers all must meet strict criteria as educators and musicians. Auditions are required, but, for most instruments, no jazz experience is necessary to join. Basic music-reading knowledge is required. For rhythm section instruments (guitar, piano, bass, drums, percussion), auditions are more selective. Each week, students will rehearse for one hour as a big band followed by one hour as sections (saxes, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section). All rehearsals are coached by leading jazz educators and professionals. The section rehearsal is similar to a small group lesson, and students benefit from extremely personalized instruction. Topics covered include jazz styles and improvisation, jazz theory, instrumental technique, sight-reading, ensemble performance practice, the jazz songbook, and more. Are you out of high school, but you would still like to learn and develop an array of jazz skills?
Lessons are available for you through NYJA.
Private lesson rates range from $60/hr.-$100/hr., depending on the location and teacher. Our teachers all must meet strict criteria as educators and musicians. They are also selected based on their communication skills and ability to work well with students of all ages.
