Afro/Latin Rhythm and Jazz Workshop, with instructor Oscar Feldman, is open to intermediate-advanced level instrumentalists who are looking to learn Latin jazz repertoire and vocabulary. The student will be introduced to the world of one of the most influential styles in music today, combining theory, example listening and practice in an ensemble situation. All instruments are welcome. This is a weekly workshop that will meet for two hours in each session.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Learning Latin jazz repertoire
  • Repertoire including music from Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Argentina
  • Study of the most influential composers in the Latin jazz genre: Paquito D'Rivera, Hermeto Pascoal, Astor Piazzolla, Mario Bauza, Miguel Matamoros, C. Portillo de la Luz, Chucho Valdes
  • Studying the most representative rhythmic patterns used in Latin jazz: rumba, chacha, brazilian samba, tango
  • Developing improvisation skills within the Latin jazz idiom
  • Improving your comping skills
  • Solo analysis and solo transcription
  • Understanding the different elements of the rhythm section's groove (piano, guitar, bass, drums & percussion)
  • Learning melodic and rhythmic interpretation through listening and practice
  • Ensemble performance



Prerequisites for the workshop include:

  • Ability to play chords/arpeggios
  • Basic knowledge of major and minor scales
  • Ability to read either musical notation and/or tablature
  • Improvisational skills are desired, but not required

There will be weekly practice and listening assignments. This is a great way to learn the skills necessary to play Latin jazz while getting a chance to play with other musicians.

About the instructor

Oscar Feldman is a New York based saxophonist and composer who has performed and/or recorded with such Latin jazz notables as Paquito D'Rivera, Bebo Valdes, Horacio Negro Hernandez, Eumir Deodato, Alex Acuna, Dino Saluzzi, and Al Di Meola. Feldman graduated Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music. His band has performed at prestigious venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blue Note, Jazz Standard, Small's, and Birdland. His most recent solo album, Oscar e Familia, was recently released by Sunnyside. As an instructor, Feldman has taught at Berklee College of Music, New Jersey Chamber Music Society, Park Performing Arts Center and the New York Jazz Academy.
