Traditional jazz ensembles tend to have only one or two players per rhythm section instrument (guitar, piano, bass, drums). To allow more students the opportunity to play in ensembles, we require that all guitarists, pianists, bassists, and drummers double on percussion instruments in the ensemble workshops. This study of percussion will enable every rhythm section player to remain actively involved in the learning process while not playing his or her primary instrument. Percussion cross-training is invaluable to every rhythm section player's understanding of ensemble groove and rhythm. Percussion instruments will be provided at workshop sessions. To ensure that rhythm section instrumentalists still get ample time each week on their primary instrument, space is quite limited for guitar, piano, bass, and drums. If you play guitar, piano, bass, or drums, and are considering enrolling in one of our ensemble workshops, do not pay for your tuition yet! There is very limited availability for those instruments, and an short audition might be required. Please contact us for more details before you pay for tuition for one of these instruments.
While the New York Jazz Academy does not offer any drumming programs at this time for children under age 9. We recommend that young students begin on piano or violin in order to build a foundation for future studies. If you think your child might be a special case, please feel free to contact us at (718) 426-0633 to discuss this.
